Organic–Mineral Interactions under Natural Conditions: A Computational Study of Flavone Adsorption on Smectite Clay

Interactions between organic species and natural minerals are fundamental to the processes around us. With aid of molecular dynamics simulations, we identify key adsorption mechanisms apigenin on smectite clay minerals. The mechanism is highly sensitive pH -- changing from co-crystallisation in acidic-to-neutral solutions ion-bridging mild-alkaline. ionic play a significant role alkaline environments: deprotonated chelate metals, which, turn, leads formation stable organic-metal-mineral complex stronger presence divalent cations.Smectite clays buffer solution mildly alkaline; hence, type exchangeable cations will be critical determining retention capacity. Overall, our study showcases computational strategy that can transferred wide variety organic-mineral systems environment.
